B.C.'s Wildfire Situation Continues to Flare Up, With More Blazes and Evacuations
British Columbia is facing another challenging wildfire season as August 2026 brings increased fire activity across the province. The BC Wildfire Service reports multiple active wildfires, with several new blazes igniting in recent days due to dry conditions and lightning strikes.
As of August 11, 2026, over 200 wildfires are burning throughout the province, with approximately 30 classified as of note due to their size, potential impact, or level of control. The Cariboo, Kamloops, and Southeast Fire Centre regions are particularly affected, with several communities under evacuation alerts or orders.
The province has implemented an enhanced firefighting response, bringing in additional resources from across Canada and international partners. The BC Wildfire Service has deployed more than 3,000 firefighters, supported by 200 helicopters and numerous pieces of heavy equipment.
"Current conditions are extremely concerning," said BC Wildfire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek. "We're seeing above-normal temperatures and below-average precipitation, creating perfect conditions for rapid fire growth."
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed through official channels, have emergency kits ready, and follow evacuation orders promptly. Air quality remains a concern in many communities, with health authorities advising vulnerable populations to limit outdoor activities.
The provincial government has activated the Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response, which includes support for evacuees and infrastructure protection.
